Silent Answer Information
2/24/93
To use Silent Answer the FAX SOFTWARE must be able to support this feature.
If the program you use is not listed here, Supra DOES NOT have data on how
to make Silent Answer function in your fax software (you must contact the
company that wrote the FAX package you are using to inquire about support
of Silent Answer).
For Silent Answer to work, another device (like an Answring Machine) must
first pick up the line for the FAX CNG tones to be detected. Once the CNG
tone is detected, the modem (under instruction from the fax software) will
connect to the phone line and start to process the incoming fax. When the
modem connects to the line to receive the fax, the device that orginally
picked up the call must hang up. (Many newer answering machines have this as
a built-in feature, but if your's does not, then you must install a device
that performs this task. Radio Shack carries such a device for 7.95, part #
43-107, that the is placed between the answering machine and the telephone
jack.)
You must locate the two devices on separate extensions to make silent
answer work correctly. This means you can not plug the answering machine
into the modem or vise versa. You can split a single extension with
a duplex jack adapter. Radio Shack commonly carries these, part number
279-357, for $4.49. (From my current catalog) The other important
factor is that you must install the Class2 option, otherwise this will
not work.
Instruction for using Winfax Lite/Pro 2.0 and Silent Answer
1. Run Winfax Administrator
2. Choose "Fax"
3. Choose "Setup"
4. Choose "More"
5. Change/Add to "Init String" to AT+FAA=2
6. Choose "OK"
7. Choose "OK"
8. Choose "Receive"
9. Choose "Receive Setup"
10. Choose "Automatic Reception Enabled"
Change "Number of Rings till Answer" to 2 more rings then answering
machine or what ever device will pick up the phone first. I have
my answering machine set for 3 rings and Winfax for 5 rings. This
value may vary and will probably require some initial trial and error.
Note: The device that is picking up the line initially must answer
after the second ring. This means you should set it to answer
on 3 rings for best results.
Instructions for using Winfax Pro 3.0 and Silent Answer
Requires same placement of the phone devices as Winfax Lite/Pro 2.0.
Also requires you install the Class2 option, otherwise this will not work
either.
1. Run Winfax Pro
2. Choose "Fax"
3. Choose "Program Setup"
4. Choose "Fax/Modem"
5. Change "Modem Initialization String" to AT&F&C1&D2+FCLASS=2+FAA=2
6. Change "Modem Reset String" to ATZ
7. Choose "OK"
8. Choose "OK"
9. Choose "Receive"
Instructions for GPFAX 2.21S and later (the SUPRA ONLY version)
1. In GPFAX Options select BOTH Silent Answer and Auto Answer
2. In GPFAX Environment set the number of rings to 2 more rings then the
answering is set to answer on.
Note: The device that is picking up the line initially must answer
after the second ring. This means you should set it to 3 for
best results. (If no other device picks up the line by the
time the number of rings the auto answer field is set to, the
modem will connect to the line to process a fax.)
Hope that helps and happy hacking.....
